However, if you are reading this, you are lucky to get an acurate (at least i hope acurate) annalysis of Pink Floyd's music. Pink Floyd, with the possible exception of THE WALL is part of the ultimate aquired taste in Rock music. If you can truthfully say that you love they're music BESIDES The Wall, our hats are off to you. For all you others, don't feel bad. Pink is definately NOT for everyone. If you can't stand long, slow songs, and drawn out guitar solos, skip this band. For those of you who will listen to the music and take in the perfectly crafted words, the etherial atmosphere (present in much of there Roger Waters era music), and the beautiful vocal and instrumental harmonies, and drug-induced melodies of early Floyd, then you will be rewarded. Contrary to most bands of today, Pink Floyd creates genuinly good music. Good here does not mean music you can headbang to or even really shout along to (again, with the exception of The Wall), but beautiful, heartfelt harmonies, heartwrenching lyrics, and inspired passion. Those who appreciate musicals and classical music will also appreciate most of the later Floyd with Roger Waters.

At the risk of sounding cliche, I will say that Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands of all time. They created timeless music that was amazing back in their day and is still amazing today. Unlike many bands who fade away with their generation and are forgotten, Pink Floyd has managed to have fans from their generation and new fans from ours. If you've never listened to Floyd before, I suggest you buy their earliest albums first and go from there. Not saying their later albums are any less then the earlier ones but you might want to get to know them and their style before you just jump into their music. All in all I think Pink Floyd will be around for a long, long time and even though not everyone will like them, there is something to be appreciated in their music.

Pink Floyd Started out as a psychedelic band founded by George Roger Waters(Bass,Vocals) and Roger Keith Barrett(Syd)(Guitar,Vocals) in 1965.The other members of the band were Bob Klose(Guitar),Nick Mason(Drums),and Richard(not Rick)Wright(Keyboards).THeir first album was The Piper at The Gates of Dawn.Most of it was written By Barrett With the exception of one song by Roger Waters.Syd was taking alot of LSD at the time and eventually would suffer a mental breakdown in 1967 just before the band became world famous.Syd was replaced by David Gilmour who was a friend of the band.Roger waters became the main songwriter for the group but everyone else wrote songs too.Later they Released A saucer ful of secrets(1967),More(1969),Atom Heart Mother(1970),Meddle(1971),Obscured by Clouds(1972) and eventually The Dark Side of The Moon in 1973.The album made the band superstars but also marked the begining of the end so to speak.Roger waters wrote all the lyrics to Dark Side... Quite simply put, one of the greatest [progressive rock] bands of all time. There's an ethereal cadence and glow to their music. No where will you find another band that puts so much emotion into what they do. Pink Floyd is also one of the most versatile bands you'll ever come across. Meaning, you cannot judge how much you will like one song or album from how much you liked another song or album. There's a different "style" and approach to all the albums. Whether it be the psychedelic grooves put forth by Syd Barrett on Piper at the Gates of Dawn; or the "political punk" on Animals ala Roger Waters; or the slower, more deliberate "story" songs by David Gilmour on Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell; you won't find a band anywhere that has a broader range of musical styles and multi-genre undertones. Many of their songs were written in tribute to their recently-deceased original singer and guitarist, Syd Barrett. One entire album, in fact, was dedicated to him; this of course being Wish You Were Here. Barrett fell victim to a dangerous lifestyle, going insane and experiencing massive brain damage from the amount of drugs he did. He lived on in the band's words, and all the fans' hearts, though. This not only provided material for some of the bands greatest songs, but also gave the songs a deeper than normal meaning from the rest. There's so much more that could be said about this amazing band; their history, their music, their incredible...incredibleness. However, I will leave it at this: Please, look past Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Not only do you look like a douche bag in conversation when those are the only albums you know of, but there's so much more than these two. The music is simply incredible, from Piper at the Gates of Dawn, all the way down to Division Bell (Yes, it is all amazing; pay no attention to the dumbfucks who say that the band "died" when Waters left. Some say that Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell were the worst albums, but all Waters did with The Final Cut was whine about how his father was killed in the war. A lot of the songs were rejected cuts originally intended for The Wall. It's still good music, but a lot of it is half-hearted and, unfortunately, nearly meaningless.) There's not enough that can be said about them, but for the sake of not writing a novel on Urban Dictionary, I will end here. Pink Floyd, you may not be together any more, but your music lives on. A very influencial and ground breaking band, formed in the 60's. Named after two bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, Pink Floyd's main lineup included Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason. Though, the original lead guitar and frontman was the genious Syd Barret, who was replaced by Gilmour around 1968, due to his excessive LSD use. Pink Floyd was one of the first, if not the first (to do it as much as they did), band to begin to experiment with unusual/electronic sounds. This helped to give them their otherwordly sound, and gave them the label as 'Space Rock' or 'Psychadelic' music. In 1973, two years after the release of 'Meddle' (one of their more melodic albums), 'Dark Side of the Moon' debued (which was actually performed live once, a year before) reached \#1 on the charts in the USA, and remained on the charts for an astonishing 741 weeks. 'Dark Side' has sold well over 30 million albums to date. 'Wish You Were Here', the next album, was basically a tribute to the long departed Syd Barret, followed by 'Animals'. Both albums brought the ideas of social insecurites and fears, the same seen in 'Dark Side of the Moon' to a more full frontal view. 'Another Brick in the Wall' considered to be the best concept album of all time, came next, this time the album was based on the walls people build around themselves to protect them from the cruelty of society and life. There was also a movie made to illustrate the album, with no spoken dialouge, just the album playing throughout. In the 80's, the band broke up after Water's leave (mainly due to him becomming a megalomaniac of sorts, and wanting too much control over the band. This did not sit well with David Gilmour in particular). Even without their main songwriter, they did get a top 5 album ('A Momentary Lapse of Reason') The band has only played together with the original lineup (discounting Syd Barret) once since the break up, at the Live 8 concert in July, 2005. Some of the major Pink Floyd hit songs include- Time Money Wish You Were Here Comfortably Numb (Which, as a side note, was NOT written about being stoned. It was about a time when Roger Waters had a sickness when he was a child, and it caused him to have the symptoms mentioned in the song.)

All the lyrics consisted of Roger's dramatic writing about war, insanity, politics, time, and money. Arguments in the late 70s led to the breakup of the band, but David started it up again in the late 80s without Roger and Roger got pissed. Pink Floyd's last album, The Division Bell, came out in 1994. Roger and Dave's Pink Floyd put their differences aside to play one last show together at Live 8 in 2005.

Everyone has heard Pink Floyd sometime, for me, it played on the radio sometimes and it was "ok" music, but not my style. It sounded to me like something my parents would love, which probably tainted my view. Then one time I took some [sugar cubes] of [LSD], and was sitting down listening to the most beautiful, dramatic, life-changing sound I had ever heard in my life...I didn't know if my brain was making it up to accompany my mood, or if someone was singing, or if this was the sound you hear right before you die and go to heaven. It was the most haunting, ethereal noise. My life was then changed, I contemplated every single thing about myself, my life, the person I've become, and the music made me understand all of the questions I've ever had about life. Words cannot describe the beauty of this sound. After about 3 hours of heavy contemplation I asked what sounds everyone was hearing, and I asked if we were in a movie. Some girl looked at me knowingly and said, there's Pink Floyd for you\! It is an amazing, original band and all of that, but when in the right state of mind ([dropping] on [acid]) it can change your entire life.

A band that first came to be in the late 60's, named by Syd Barrett, who was the lead singer/guitarist/song-writer. A man before his time. The other members were Roger Waters (bass), Rick Wright (keyboards/vocals) and Nick Mason (drums). Sadly, Syd had to leave the band, and he was replaced by David Gilmour (guitar/vocals). The band are best known for the fantastic albums Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, but their back catalogue has albums that are just as fantastic, such as The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Wish You Were Here and A Saucerful Of Secrets, and that's only a few\! The band will be remembered as one of the best bands of all time, they deserve to be placed beside The Beatles, The Stones and The Who as one of the pioneers of British music and rock music as we know it. Sadly, Syd Barrett, who left the limelight after recording two solo albums in the 70's and went back to a regular life, died in 2006, on July the 7th (my 16th birthday). Also, relationships between band members have been sour since the recording of The Wall (in which Wright was fired by Waters, who left soon after), until Live 8 in 2005, when Waters, Gilmour, Wright and Mason played together for the first time in 24 years. Pink Floyd are usually associated with drug use, but they even stated in their interviews in Live in Pompeii that they did not want to be seen as a drug band. You don't need to get high to appreciate their music, you just need to let yourself go and listen and be taken away on a musical journey beyond your wildest dreams. Long Live the Floyd\!
